What Makes Lawn Aeration Worth It?
As a professional provider of lawn care services in Pensacola, we here at R House know that there is a lot that goes into maintaining a healthy lawn. Not only do you have to mow your grass regularly throughout its entire growing season, but you've gotta remember to fertilize it, make sure all the sprinklers are working properly, be on the lookout for insect and fungal damage, etc. So when you see aeration recommended as part of your lawn maintenance regimen, and you don't already know what that is, you may wonder: Is it really worth it?
What Is Aeration?
Before we can talk about why you may (or may not) need lawn aeration, you first need to understand what aeration actually is. Aeration is the process of poking a series of small yet deep holes throughout your lawn. That brief description might sound like something that could harm your lawn, but actually, it's very helpful. Aeration breaks up thatch and compacted soil, creating channels that help air, water, and nutrients reach roots that might otherwise be deprived. This results in a lawn that's thicker, greener, and more capable of resisting pests, weeds, and disease.
Does Every Lawn Need Aeration?
We like to take a measured response to this question. The short answer is that not all lawns need aeration every year, but nearly all lawns benefit from aeration at some point, whether it's done twice a year or once every other year. Here are the two main reasons why:
Reducing Soil Compaction
Soil compacts over time, and as it does, the dense soil makes it harder for the aforementioned air, water, and nutrients to reach the roots. When that happens, the roots can begin to rot, your grass starts to wilt, and overall, your lawn becomes much more vulnerable to infections and infestations.
In areas where clay-heavy soils are prevalent, aeration is a necessary part of annual lawn care, but since Pensacola soil tends to be more sandy than clay-heavy, natural soil compaction isn't always as severe. However, even sandy lawns can become compacted over time simply from being walked and/or driven over. If you use golf carts or other vehicles on your lawn, or if your kids and pets spend a lot of time playing outside, then aerating it is a good way to prevent the soil from compacting.
Disrupting Thatch Buildup
Even if your lawn is just for show and is rarely walked on, it will still develop thatch, which is a layer of dead grass leaves and other organic matter that forms directly above the soil's surface. A little bit of thatch is actually beneficial because it helps retain water, insulates your grass, and inhibits weed growth. Once that thatch grows more than a half-inch thick, though, it can start preventing water and nutrients from reaching your grass's roots, similar to how compacted soil does.
Dethatching and aeration are two slightly different things, but aeration does remove a significant amount of thatch and gives your grass a chance to breathe again. Even in yards that aren't very compacted, aeration is still beneficial for thatch control.
How Often Do I Need Aeration?
That is going to depend on your yard and how you want to approach your lawn care. As we typically work with residential clients who use their lawns a lot, we usually advise aeration about 1-2 times per year. However, if your lawn doesn't see enough use to significantly compact it, and it has a healthy thatch layer that isn't too thick, you may decide you want to skip a year. Even if you do that, though, keep on the lookout for heavy thatch buildup, signs of root rot, or other indicators that your lawn's health is declining.
